The Potential of Biosensor Technology Application in Covid-19 Detection

COVID-19 has changed the way we live our lives since the virus that causes it, SARS-CoV-2, spread throughout the world, making it so that governments would have to induce lockdowns and enforce special protocol. Alongside the development and administrations of vaccines to the public, the detection of the virus is of utmost importance. For those who must cross country borders, or for cases where time is vital, the specificity and sensitivity of COVID-19 detection are important to hamper the further spread of the coronavirus. The current standard for COVID-19 diagnosis is the RT-PCR test, which has shown success but has its share of fallbacks. The RT-PCR test takes time to return a result, needs trained professionals to carry out, and has a change of false negatives if in the early stages of infection. New forms of detection have been developed using recent biosensor technology that has shown promising results of high specificity and sensitivity, as well as affordability and ease of usage. This study shows many upcoming biosensor methods of detection that may be able to combat the virus better than existing technology, such as EC, SERS, and FET-based biosensors.
